North Conway, NH, picked as Favorite Destination Village

As you have already likely read, since everyone is talking about it, North Conway, New Hampshire was voted the Favorite Destination around 600 of the readers of Snoweast Magazine that voted!   Of course we were thrilled to hear this, but alas, it was no secret for those who make this place home!

Being close to nearly a dozen downhill and cross country ski resorts and the wide array of activities, attractions, restaurants and shopping that this area has to offer, why wouldn’t it be picked number one!?

One of the other categories voted on by the readers was their favorite ski area.  Since we can get to 4 or 5 states pretty quickly in New England, they separated them by state.  For the North Conway and Jackson, New Hampshire areas, we were most interested in Maine and New Hampshire.

Maine’s favorite ski areas were, in order, Sugarloaf, Sunday River and Saddleback.  New Hampshire’s were Bretton Woods, Wildcat and Cannon.

It truly is a privilege to receive this kind of national recognition. For our awesome Bed and Breakfast, we have been receiving rave reviews from patrons and even an award here and there for the quality and service we provide.  We intend on maintaining this level of excellence and hope to garner some additional national recognition ourselves!

Special Thanks to Christene Newton of Badger Realty for that Great Photo!!!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Bernerhof Inn

We know you will have many questions about your stay at the Bernerhof Inn, just a few miles from North Conway, NH.  We want to make your  romantic getaway in the White Mountains as easy as possible, so we’ve attempted to answer as many of your questions here as possible.  Let us know if there was a question you had that we might add to our list.

Who are the innkeepers?
Melissa Leonard and Leonard Magliocca are the innkeepers at the Bernerhof.  Their history in hospitality, love of people and commitment to quality innkeeping will ensure your comfortable stay at the Bernerhof.

What time can I check in?
Your  room will be ready by 4:00 pm.  If you would like an early check-in, please ask when you make your reservation and we will try to accommodate you. We strive to greet you when you arrive so that we can welcome you, tour the inn, and show you to your suite. If you know you will arrive after 7:00 pm, a “Late Arrival” letter will be posted at the front desk with directions to your room.

What time is check out?
We ask that you check out by 11 am.  We are occasionally able to accommodate a later check out.  If you would like to request a later check-out time, please speak with The Innkeepers (Melissa Leonard or Leonard Magliocca)  as soon as possible.  If you do not make arrangements to check out after 11 am, you will incur an additional $35 charge.

What should I do if I need to cancel my reservation?
The Bernerhof Inn is a small, boutique country inn and last minute cancellations greatly impact us. Reservations cancelled greater than fourteen days prior to arrival will be subject to a $25 administrative fee. If you cancel within fourteen days of your arrival, you will be responsible for the full amount due.

What time is breakfast?
Breakfast is served in the dining room from 8:00 am until 9:30 am.  Coffee is generally available by 7:30 am.

What is served for breakfast?
The breakfast menu changes daily. Each day guests will be treated to fresh fruit and juices, fresh baked items and a sweet or savory entrée.  Additionally, we always offer a variety of cereals, instant oatmeal and steaming coffee plus a variety of teas.  We work hard to include as many fresh local ingredients in our breakfasts as the season’s bounty will allow.

What if I have dietary limitations?
Please notify the innkeepers upon making reservations if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies.  We are happy to accommodate low-fat, gluten-free or vegan diets with alternative breakfast items.

Do you allow children?
Well-mannered children of all ages are always welcome at the Bernerhof.  While most guest rooms are designed to accommodate two, a number of the suites at the Bernerhof are ideal for families traveling together.  For the comfort of other guests, we ask that parents supervise children at all times.

What can I do if I am too hot or cold?
This classic Victorian inn circa 1880 comes complete with beautiful antiques and a traditional heating system for the time period. Each room has been equipped with state-of-the art air conditioning systems for the warmer summer months.  Additionally, we offer eco-friendly electric fireplaces and additional back-up heaters in the winter months to create both ambiance and warmth.  Please contact the innkeeper if you need assistance with the temperature in your room.

When is cleaning done?
Housekeeping is generally provided daily between 8 am and noon.  Beds are made and towels are refreshed during this time.  Please let the innkeeper know if you request additional items in your room.

Where can we smoke?
The Bernerhof Inn is entirely non-smoking.  Guests may not smoke in rooms. There will be a designated smoking area outside the building.  If smoking occurs in a guest room, the entire room has to be cleaned top to bottom.  This will result in a $150 cleaning fee charged back to the guest.

Can I burn candles?
Regrettably, our fire insurance policy prohibits candle burning.  Yet recognizing how important ambiance is, we provide eco-friendly flameless flicker candles in each room. Additionally lights with rheostats above all spa tubs have been installed for softer lighting. To enforce this policy, we must charge guests a $50 fee if candle burning is discovered.

Waterfalls in Mt. Washington Valley

After the snowy winter, spring is the perfect time to take the Mt. Washington Valley Waterfall Tour.

In what Yankee Magazine calls “the ultimate rock concert”, Mt Washington Valley, NH offers a host of ideal locations for waterfall viewing, and come April and May those who love to see the water fall will get a good look as snowmelt turns to rushing falls. No where in New England are waterfalls as abundant and accessible for viewing. Grab a camera and visit the following locations for the perfect spring photo opportunity and a great romantic getaway!

Sabbaday Falls: There are three drops in the falls, pretty pools and a pothole formed by the swirling waters and sand. You can’t swim here, but it‘s a great spot for picnics. Directions: Take the Kancamagus Hwy from Conway. The Sabbaday Falls Picnic Area is about 3.5 miles west of where Bear Notch Road joins the Kanc. The falls are a short 0.33 mile hike in.

Glen Ellis Falls:
The Ellis River plunges 64 feet to the basin below in a torrent of white water here. Make sure to stop and read the signs that describe the geology and history of the area. Directions: The turn-off to the falls is 0.7 miles south of Pinkham Notch on Route 16. This is also the parking area for the Glen Boulder and Wildcat Ridge Trails. A tunnel takes you to the other side of the highway where you turn right to reach the falls. It’s a relatively easy 0.2 mile walk to the falls.

Crystal Cascade:
This is a two-tiered spectacular fall, with a dramatic 60’ wall of water, followed by a 20’ plunge, ending with the river making a 90 degree turn at the bottom. Directions: Park at the AMC Pinkham Notch Camp and take the path on the left of the Trading Post – the Tuckerman Ravine Trail. The falls are a 0.3 mile walk up.

Thompson Falls: This is actually a series of falls along Thompson Brook at Wildcat Ski Area. The views to Mt. Washington from the highest ledge are worth the trip! Directions: Take Route 16 to Wildcat Ski Area. To reach the falls, take the “Way of Wildcat” Nature Trail from the ski area’s parking lot. At the far end of the trail loop, you’ll find the path to the falls. It’s a 0.7 mile easy trek to the falls.

Arethusa Falls:
Measuring in at about 176 feet, these are the highest single falls in New Hampshire. A bonus here is Bemis Brook Falls, Fawn Pool and Coliseum Falls can all be visited at the same time. Directions: Take Route 302 toward Bretton Woods and look for Crawford Notch State Park entrance. Turn onto a paved road just beyond the park and park on the short side road below the railroad tracks. The trail starts to the left of the private road above the RR tracks and it’s about 1.3 miles to the falls (2 miles if you take the trail to Bemis Brook Falls, Coliseum Falls & Fawn Pool).

Flume Cascade & Silver Cascade:
These falls are easily viewable from the car, but you can get close for a better look. Directions: On Route 302, just below Crawford Notch Depot.

Ripley Falls & Kendron Flume:
An easy hike with swimming holes at the top of the falls and pools upstream. It’s not safe, however, to climb the face of the falls. Directions: The Arethusa-Ripley Falls trail is off Route 302 at the old Wiley House station.

Jackson Falls:
These are one of the popular watering holes for locals on a hot summer day. Easily accessible, they offer wonderful pools and small falls to cool off under. A few picnic tables nearby offer the perfect spot for a picnic lunch, dinner or cocktail. Directions: Take Carter Notch Road about 3/10 mile from Route 16A in Jackson.

Diana’s Baths:
On a full moon night, this is one of the most romantic places in the world. The water supply for the area is located above this, so no access is allowed above, but this series of small falls, and pools offers the perfect place to cool off. You’ll hike about ½ mile in, following a well-marked trail to find them. Directions: Access the trailhead from west Side Rd., about ½ mile beyond the point where West Side Road turns toward Conway.
